FIGHT AGAINST COVID-19: A MICROBIOLOGIST TURNS TO AN ENGINEER

Dr. Courage K. S. Saba, a senior lecturer and Microbiologist at the Department of Biotechnology of the University for Development Studies.

Regular hand-washing especially with soap under running water have been the most recommended preventive measure to the novel coronavirus.

This has led to the development of some simple to complex hand-washing devices with the 'Veronica bucket' as the most popular of all.

Joining the masses of individuals coming out with innovations to win the fight against the COVID-19 disease is Dr. Courage K. S. Saba, a Senior Lecturer and Microbiologist at the Department of Biotechnology of the University for Development Studies.

Dr. Saba who currently has assume the position of an Engineer have come out with a hand-washing prototype called the 'SabaWash.'

Speaking to Radio Grin reporters, he mentioned that 'SabaWash' by far will be the most appropriate hand-washing machine suitable for rural settings.
He explained that the birth of 'SabaWash'  was conceived from his knowledge and understanding of the routes of microbial transmission. He opined that the 'Veronica bucket' when not used appropriately could serve as sources of contamination. This he said by highlighting that the same tap which is opened with an uncleaned hand is closed after the hands are washed and cleaned.
Dr. Courage Saba demonstrating how one can still contaminate his/her washed hands while using the regular Veronica Bucket.

According to him, unlike the 'Veronica bucket' the use of 'SabaWash' as hand-washing machine employs one's feet in regulating the dispensing of a stationed liquid soap and the flow of water. With this, the hands do not come in contact with any part of the machine - he added.

Again, unlike the sensor and solar driven hand-washing machines, 'SabaWash' could be afforded by all since it is made from cheap and locally available raw materials.

Ending his submission, he disclosed to Radio Grin reporters his plans of patenting the prototype, 'SabaWash'.

Nevertheless, he asserted his readiness to produce to meet the demands of Ghanaians with the needed support from the government and other NGOs for mass production of SabaWash.
