THE JUSTICE AND PEACE COMMISION OF THE GHANA CATHOLIC BISHOP’S CONFERENCE ORGANISES A TOWN HALL MEETING AT YAGABA-KUBORI CONSTITUENCY
As we draw closer to
the 2020 polls with just 11 days ahead, the Ghana Catholic Bishop’s Conference launched
a commission “Justice and Peace” to aid in the peace campaign before, during
and after the polls.
The Justice and Peace Commission under the
Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocese organized a Town Hall meeting at the Yagaba-Kubori
constituency on the 26th November 2020. The meeting was held at the
Assemblies of God Auditorium with representatives from the office of the Bishop Most. Rev. Fr. Alfred Agyenta, the National Commission for
Civic Education(NCCE), Electoral Commission(EC), BNI, Political Parties and
chiefs of the constituency.
“The role of parliamentarians and local authorities in
participatory Governance for community development” was the theme for the Town
Hall meeting.
Speaking as a representative from the Justice and Peace
commission was the Parish Priest of the Saints Peter and Paul Parish, Fumbisi
Rev.father Michael Ernest Okyere who also played the role of the chairperson of
the meeting.
Rev. father Michael educate and explained to the
constituents and sundry present the role and responsibility of the members of
parliament in Ghana. He made mention that the members of parliament in Ghana
are the law makers and they represent the constituency at the national level,
they endorse and approves budgets proposed by the executive arm of government,
they also oversee and evaluates the expenditure of government, endorses all
forms of taxes proposed by the executive arm of government, oversees both the
executive and judicial arm of government, these were the few roles enlisted by
Rev. father Michael.
Before he retired to his seat, his final speech was a peace message from the Justice and Peace Commission, he encouraged all electorates to maintain peace before, during and after election and that they should go to the polling stations in peace, vote in peace, walk home peacefully and if there is the need to jubilate after the results have been declared then they should jubilate in peace without “stepping on anyone’s toe”.
Also speaking at the event was the director for National Commission for Civic Education Mr. Imoro Thomas, he made his submissions based on the need why we should maintain peace before, during and after the elections, he also made mention some consequences should anyone attempt causing mayhem or violence in the constituency and nation at large, the NCCE shall continue to educate the general public through all its channels for a peaceful and stable nation he said.
The Electoral Commission representative also gave an update of preparation towards a free and fair election, he also made mention that the 24hours timeline for declaring of results is feasible if only the electorates maintain peace before, during and after elections at each polling station and the coalition centers.Speaking on behalf of the chiefs Naa Sulemana Bature the
chief of Loagri shared that he was glad when he received the invitation letter
which clearly stated that the two main parliamentary candidate will be present
but upon arrival he was dishearten not to see any of them available. According
to him they are the main tool for peace and since the electorates are rallying
behind them, a peace message from them to the electorates and their
subordinates will encourage them to maintain peace and stay away from violence
since their candidate has pledged to peace.
He also pleaded with the security force and the electoral commission officials to remain neutral and discharge their duties as expected of them.
He finally pleaded to the police commander and his entourage
to be more vigilant and apprehend all perpetrators as there are increase in
robbery cases in the district.
Political parties present took a pledge for peace to preach peace and become peace ambassadors before, during and after the elections it was rather unfortunate only one of the political parties were present, also the entire gathering took similar pledge to become peace ambassadors before, during and after the polls.
